Perret was elected Lafayette Parish Clerk of Court on November 20, 1999. He was elected in June 2000 by his fellow Clerks to serve as State Director for Louisiana to IACREOT (International Association of Clerks, Recorders, Election Officials and Treasurers). In March of 2001, Perret was elected to serve on the Board of Directors for the Louisiana Clerks of Court Association. In March 2003, he was re-elected to the Board of Directors for another two-year term.
